This term dates back to 1961. More than twenty years later, as the term became more common, it became popular that this day was the point of the year when retail began to make profits, in American slang from "red" (in the red) to "black" (in the black).

From the beginning of the 21st century many retailers originating from the United States tried to introduce the term Black Friday in other countries around the world. In Bulgaria Black Friday was first introduced in 2015 and in 2016 more and more companies started to apply it.
