Black Friday, in the United States, is the unofficial name for the day following Thanksgiving Day, it's the fourth Friday of November and is considered as the beginning of Christmas period since 1952.

Black Friday isn't an official holiday, but in California and in some other states they have a day-off on Thanksgiving Day usually instead of another federal holiday, such as Columbus Day. Many employees and schools have a day-off on Thanksgiving day and the day after so together with the week-end they have a four day holiday that increases the number of potential buyers. 

The first data from the use of the term "Black Friday" comes from Philadelphia, where it was used to describe the high and annoying traffic for the pedestrians, the day after Thanksgiving. This term dates back to 1961. More than twenty years later, as the term became more common, it became popular that this day was the point of the year when retail began to make profits, in American slang from "red" (in the red) to "black" (in the black).
